Daycare for Future Scholars is a family-owned business that has embedded itself in the Cleveland’s Central Neighborhood for the last nine years. Director Greg Jones said he and his family are actively engaged in all aspects of the preschool site and each bring different talents to the table to care for the children and are present at the site every day, serving as teachers and administrators. He says they picked Central neighborhood to start their business because it felt like a good fit for them and they saw a great need that they thought they could help meet. “We wanted to give something back to the community and be part of the community.”
Greg’s sister Sherrae Dorsey, and Administrator and Lead Preschool Teacher, echoed this sentiment. She said, “We truly are here for the children. We care about the welfare of the children and we’re here to educate them and to focus on the whole child—mental health, well-being, and their family.” Partnerships with the Christ Child Society ensures each child gets a coat in the winter and the ongoing use of a USDA-approved food program keeps the meals served at the center healthy.
Over the last nine years, Daycare for Future Scholars has created partnerships in Central that help them realize their vision. In partnership with the Council for Economic Opportunities in Greater Cleveland (CEOGC), they’re able to provide services for the children and families in their center through Case Dental School, the Cleveland Sight Center, and PNC Fairfax Connection. They’ve also worked to cultivate relationships with neighborhood institutions, including the Central Promise Neighborhood, to talk to other community organizations and share common experiences and best practices.
Greg also said they are focused on broadening the experiences of the children they serve by exposing the children to music through annual field trips to Severance Hall and a partnership with a Cleveland State professor of music. Children who attend Daycare for Future Scholars also benefit from a partnership with the George Washington Carver School 4H club and Cleveland Metroparks’ Eco Explorers program.
Daycare for Future Scholars is a 3-star rated preschool located in Central. It serves children ages 18 months to 12 years, Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
